5+ Cool Tricks for DB2 LUW

100% of our audience learned something! Based on his popular and humorous IDUG presentations, Adam treats our audience to his wit and wisdom for DB2 LUW --- and even includes a bonus trick! #6! You will learn about STMM - how it works and ideas for monitoring it, a secret decoder ring for db2diag.log, Workload Manager and how to pull pranks on your friends, how NOT to use db2dart, and more! Enjoy...

Show Host Scott Hayes Commentary

If you don't like the way STMM works, blame Adam - he was the chief architect of it back in DB2 V9.1. He shares his email address at the end of the presentation. I think STMM has improved since its inception, but still wish that we had the ability to set ceilings and floors (max and min) sizes for each memory area controlled by STMM. Remember that shuffling memory allocation from one area to another only serves to compensate for physical design flaws whilst mitigating application issues. During DBI's short commercial, I showed how increasing a bufferpool size drove CPU utilization to 100%. Moving memory merely moves or mitigates bottlenecks. But I'm not here to preach from my STMM soap box - Adam's presentation was funny, informative, useful, helpful, and valuable. 100% of our attendees learned something, so odds are high that you will too!

Here's just a few things you are going to learn about: STMM inner workings, STMM monitoring, db2diag.log, Workload Manager (WLM), db2dart, recent performance improvements in BLU, and more!

DBI Software

Don't fast forward through today's educational commercial from DBI! Adam showed a cool way to parse STMM logs, turn them into Excel spreadsheets, and then graph the data. Looking at the graph, Adam noticed some significant dips but could offer no explanation for the dips. The Excel graphs were naked - without context of other events occurring in the environment. In DBI's commercial, you'll see trend charts that include significant events plotted on the charts in context. We could see that, when the bufferpool size was increased, CPU utilization spiked to 100%. There is "data" and there is "information" - make sure you know the difference. And when you are ready to turn Information into actionable Insights, be sure to Contact DBI.
