Oracle reorganization. A phrase that sends shudders through even the most fearless database wranglers. So what is it? Is it really necessary? Does it really improve the performance of the database? At a very high level, reorganization is a realignment of blocks to better align free space. Yes, at some point reorganizations are necessary. Yes, when blocks are aligned to make the most efficient use of free space database performance is improved.

So what do you do when you get a call/email saying that <insert_aplication_name_here> is running "slow"? Of course the application in question is a third party application that doesn't allow access to the SQL being run or generated. You only have access to its schema objects.

You’ve contacted the vendor, but they won’t do anything without “proof” that it’s their application that’s causing the problem. What can you do?

I am Shawn Kelley. I joined DBI a few months ago. Before DBI, I spent some time with SGI and Oracle Corporation. My role at DBI includes both pre-sales and post-sales technical support. Imagine that - the guy that helps sell you DBI's great software will also be involved with supporting you afterwards. To me, this is the definition of integrity.

In my first blog post, I guess I'd like you to know that I really enjoy helping people and solving problems. I'm the kind of guy that takes his home computer apart to see what is inside, then I start replacing parts to see what happens. I like to tinker with OS configuration settings that most folks have never heard about. I don't think you'll have very many problems with DBI's Oracle performance tools (my primary focus area), but if a situation comes up then I look forward to helping you. And let us not limit my support assistance to just technical issues, if any - I'll be awfully bored.
