If You’re Not Ready to Ride the Wave, You’ll Be Crushed by It

Some people say there is no such thing as bad publicity. But, what happens when everyone notices, and you are not ready?


Some people say there is no such thing as bad publicity. In fact, there are few things more frustrating than working tirelessly and single-mindedly to create a great product or a great offer that no one seems to notice, no matter how hard you try.

However, there is one thing infinitely more frustrating than that - it is when everyone notices, and you are not ready.

That is exactly what happened to AirStrip Technologies. If you are a consumer technology company, maybe the one thing bigger than a Super Bowl ad, which you would have to pay for, is a hot demo of your product at an Apple keynote, which you do not. Luke Dormehl writes about it in a great article in Cult of Mac entitled, “Having a Hot Demo at an Apple Keynote Comes at a Cost.”

As Dormehl describes in the article, “AirStrip’s Sense4Baby fetal monitor and Watch app was the best tech demo of yesterday’s event. It showed a doctor remotely checking on a pregnant woman, who was able to remotely stream her heartbeat using her Apple Watch and a special cardio strap. In addition to collecting a medically accurate cardiogram, it could also detect and differentiate the heartbeat of the unborn baby. Amazing!”

Moreover, the demo of AirStrip’s product occurred immediately after Tim Cook’s presentation. Now the execs at AirStrip knew that their product was going to be demoed, and being smart leaders, they were prepared for a 10- or 12-foot wave - but what they experienced instead was a tsunami. As millions of people converged on their site within seconds, their systems crashed.

What should have been a victory turned into a cautionary tale. What was the opportunity of a lifetime became an opportunity lost.
