in DB2 News ( DB2 Performance)

I have attended EVERY North American IDUG Conference since the first in Chicago in 1988. IMHO, there is simply no better forum for learning about DB2. This year DBI is a GOLD Sponsor of the Anaheim Conference and we'll be showcasing our newest releases of the DBI Performance Tools for DB2 LUW. CLICK HERE for a FREE VIP PASS to the Expo Hall. I will be attending as many sessions and events as possible. CLICK HERE to view my personal marked up copy of the IDUG DB2 Tech Conference Grid.

In related news, remember to
register for your free seat in our virtual studio audience on 8 April 2011 when The DB2Night Show™ will announce our DB2's GOT TALENT contest winners. The episode theme is " All about IDUG ". IDUG Volunteers will be sharing helpful information about education, networking, and free DB2 certification opportunities, and much much more. AND, if you missed the Early Bird Registration Discount, IDUG will be announcing a "DB2Night Show" discount during this show that will be valid for one week only - through 15 April 2011!

Scott's Recommended IDUG Events

If you're new to IDUG or if you are keen on following DB2 LUW Performance topics, here is a listing of the sessions and events that I plan to attend (provided, of course, that I don't get distracted).

Monday, 2 May

Ed Seminar "Z04" is a top pick. I know this for sure because I am teaching this class! I have offered this class before at IDUG NA, EMEA, and AP in 2010, and everyone that has attended has given this class RAVE reviews. This class is a working lab. YOU bring YOUR Snapshot Data to the class, and together we will analyze the performance of YOUR database. YOU receive electronic copies of the SQL Commands (over 36! ) that we use during the class. YOU will leave this class EXCITED because you will be going home with several ideas for tuning YOUR database. CLICK HERE for the class preparation instructions!

Tuesday, 3 May

K01 - Don't miss the keynote session with Jeff Jonas... he's a terrific speaker!

S02 - The duo of Tim and Berni are sure to provide some very interesting and compelling information!

C01 - Paul Z is a terrific presenter.

C02 - I/O sucks. It's a necessary evil. All databases have to do it, but should do as little of it as possible. I admit, I am biased on this session because I am presenting it along with Andrew Endicott from Cardinal Health. In this tech session, Andrew and I will be sharing techniques for minimizing and eliminating I/O and sharing case studies.

C03 - Alexander Kopac won Best Speaker at last year's conference and I've spoken with him about his presentation "50 Fabulous Ways...". If you can only attend two technical sessions during the entire conference, DON'T MISS C02 and C03! I'll bet a stack of money on Alexander landing in the Top 5 Best User Speakers in 2011.

C04 - Matthias Nicola is a good speaker. Page Cleaning isn't sexy, but it is important. I am moderating this session.

Don't miss the IDUG Welcome Reception from 5:30-7:30pm. Get your passport to prizes stamped by all the exhibiting vendors for chances to win several great prizes. DBI is THE SPONSOR of this Welcome Reception - enjoy drinks and snacks on us! For Passport to Prizes, DBI is giving away an Apple iPod Nano 6th Generation.

Wednesday, 4 May

C05 or D05 - This is a tough pick. At the moment, I am leaning towards C05 to hear what Michael Cornish has to say about automatic tuning of memory. As many of you probably know, I'm not a big fan of STMM. STMM robs Peter to pay Paul in its scheme of shifting memory around to compensate for physical design flaws. In The DB2Night Show Episode 14 (watch the replay) , I demonstrated "the real truths" about STMM and adverse consequences on CPU consumption. Well, back to the session debate, I enjoy listening to User speakers too and web application performance sounds interesting. I'll toss a coin at 8:30am and decide.

C06 - New Ways to Solve Locking Problems. I don't think there is any such thing as locking problems - only locking symptoms. If a database is well tuned for its workloads, then SQL runs fast and lock collisions are minimal. Nonetheless, I'm in C06.

C07 - Brad Price is an excellent presenter. Plan on laughing and learning.

12:00-1:30pm Lunch and the Exhibit Hall. Lunch is my favorite meal of the day. I try not to miss it! Please visit the vendors too. icon_wink

1:30-2:30pm Vendor Sponsored Presentations (aka VSPs). DBI will be presenting "Fearless Application Performance Management from Cradle to Grave". Don't miss this. Everyone in our audience will be leaving with a really nice prize, and we are raffling off American Express Gift Cards and an Apple iPod Nano 6G.

D08 - I've been mentoring Paul Turpin for years on public speaking, and he has evolved, IMHO, into an excellent speaker. And, I love talks about Indexes.

SIGs - Special Interest Groups. Pick one that interests you and go. Conversations are often quite lively and informative.

5:00-7:00pm Exhibit Hall Reception. Please stop by DBI's booth #201/#203.

7:00-9:00pm IDUG Technical Reception at the Sheraton Anaheim. I assume this is within walking distance. It is unlikely that I'll be able to attend due to a conflict with a DBI private event.

I'll cover Thursday and Friday in my next blog post. This one has reached my limits for length and attention. icon_rolleyes

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you at IDUG!

Cheers,

Scott
