Special guest: Julian Stuhler, Triton Consulting, UK

All roads lead to Rome, very true for using DB2 in Java!

In episode #Z08, our special guest Julian Stuhler (IBM Gold Consultant, IBM Champion and former IDUG president) gives an excellent overview of the many ways you can exploit DB2 using the Java programming language; varying from simple JDBC to PureQuery. But he also discusses the impedance mismatch between Java and Relational Databases and the new features in DB2 9 and DB2 10 which Java can benefit from. Are you into Java then this DB2Night Show is a must!

Show Host Klaas Brant Commentary

Summer break is over (lousy summer here) and Season #3 of the DB2Night Show has started with a great show! As always Julian Stuhler is not only knowledgeable but also a great presenter. Maybe he talks a bit fast, if English is not your native language. But if that is problem then just watch the show again. As one of the directors of Triton Consulting, a leading consultancy company in the UK, Julian is a busy man. For a presentation for the DB2 community he still manages to find time and the survey stats tell us that today’s show is one of the best we had. Thanks Jules for a great start of season #3.

Julian tumbled into the wonderful world of Java in the year 2000 when he was one of the co-authors of the redbook: DB2 Java Stored Procedures, Learning by example. Before you rush-off to download this book beware that much has changed since then. And this exactly what the first part of Julian’s presentation was all about: an overview of the many ways to can use DB2 in Java with all the pros and cons. The second part he explains how Java can benefit from many new DB2 9 and DB2 10 features.

Not only did we have a great show but the polls were also fun. Especially the "what programming languages do you use?" had some surprising answers. COBOL still strong in pole position! But PL/1 still going strong and surprise, surprise even assembler has quite a lot of supporters :-o

Did you see what we have in mind for you in season #3? Coming up are Cristian Molaro, Namik Hrle, Willie Favero, Dave Beulke, Sheryl Larsen, Dan Luksetich and Phil Grainger. Wow! And if that's not enough we have live show from IOD and an eggnog party near Christmas. So go to

A message from our sponsor SoftBase

In spite of massive investments of money, time, and resources into critical DB2® for z/OS® projects, most still run late and far over budget. Plus, application reliability is poor in spite of strenuous coding and testing efforts. Managing DB2 test data seems to be a significant bottleneck in many installations.

SoftBase’s products enable DB2 users to code, test, and deploy more reliable DB2 for z/OS applications in a fraction of the time that it takes them now.

DB/IQ-QA™ provides Application Developers advice, recommendations, and standardization that will dramatically accelerate coding of their DB2 SQL Statements

QBase™ enables developers to code and dynamically test SQL statements without executing the entire application.

SoftBase's TestBase™ provides a revolutionary new patented technology for test data management called Slice™ that enables all Application Developers and QA Personnel in a shop to test together within one set of DB2 objects without impacting each other’s results.
