As IBM Champions and DB2 GOLD Consultants, Martin and I have both been concerned about the relationship between SAP and IBM. Martin sheds some light on interesting tidbits of history. A few years ago, SAP raised the price of DB2 licenses. IBM responded by suggesting SAP customers buy DB2 licenses directly from IBM. SAP began to heavily market Hana, and, as recently as last year, it seemed SAP tech support wanted DB2 to fail - by prohibiting index changes. About two weeks after Martin published this article, SAP issued a tech note that is much more supportive of index changes. All of the details, including the Tech Note, are in the replay. Remarkable.
Here's the bottom line. Vended applications, like SAP and others, are designed for a broad range of customers, akin to "one size fits all" sweaters. To achieve optimized performance, organizations should tailor these applications according to their specific needs and implementations of the applications. What is right for one organization might be wrong for yours. If there is poor performing SQL, or unused indexes, you will need to fix these things even if your vendor resists. Once you fix the issues, measure your success and share the results with your vendor. In many cases, your vendor will then embrace your changes.
Two of DBI's Customer Success Stories come from SAP clients: Primesource Building Products and Wasserstrom. At Primesource, we helped them run SAP 4X faster in less than 24 hours, thus allowing them to avoid a costly (and unnecessary) hardware upgrade! Wasserstrom successfully runs SAP on half of the SAP recommended hardware. With the right index tuning work, SAP can run screaming fast on DB2 LUW. If you would like your SAP implementation to run faster without hardware and license upgrades, please
