In this episode, Shaikh Quader, AI Architect and Master Inventor at IBM Db2, took us on a deep dive into how artificial intelligence is being integrated directly with IBM Db2 and how Db2 can serve as an enterprise data foundation for modern AI applications. As Generative AI and Large Language Models continue to transform application architectures, one of the biggest challenges organizations face is connecting these AI systems securely and efficiently with trusted enterprise data. Shaikh explained how Db2 is evolving to help address this challenge by bringing AI capabilities closer to where enterprise data already resides. Topics discussed in this session included: AI and Machine Learning with IBM Db2 Db2 native vector capabilities Vector storage and similarity search Building semantic search applications with Db2 Large Language Model (LLM) integration Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) using enterprise Db2 data Integrating Db2 with modern AI application frameworks Bringing AI processing closer to enterprise data Using SQL and existing Db2 data in AI workflows Practical enterprise AI use cases with Db2 Architecture considerations for AI applications The evolving role of Db2 in the Generative AI era A particularly important theme from the session was that organizations do not necessarily need to move their trusted enterprise data into a separate data platform simply to begin building AI applications. Db2's evolving vector and AI capabilities allow developers and architects to build intelligent applications while continuing to leverage the security, governance, reliability, scalability, and SQL capabilities of the Db2 platform. Shaikh also discussed how vector search changes the way applications retrieve information. Traditional SQL searches for exact values and relationships, while vector similarity search enables applications to retrieve information based on semantic meaning. Combining these approaches creates new possibilities for intelligent search, recommendation systems, RAG applications, AI assistants, and other Generative AI solutions. The discussion around LLMs and Retrieval-Augmented Generation was especially relevant for enterprises. RAG allows organizations to combine the reasoning and language capabilities of an LLM with trusted information retrieved from their own enterprise data. Db2 can play an important role in this architecture by providing the governed enterprise data and vector retrieval capabilities needed to ground AI-generated responses. Shaikh provided an engineering perspective on how these technologies fit together and what they mean for Db2 DBAs, application developers, data engineers, architects, and organizations beginning their AI modernization journey. The session concluded with an interactive discussion with the global Db2 community covering AI architecture, vector databases, LLM integration, RAG, Db2 development, and the future direction of databases in an AI-driven world.
